Build a Final Fantasy VII characterin your browser, right now.
No sign-in and nothing to install. Take the game's own field models apart, put a different head on a different body, repaint them, stretch the skeleton, and play the original animations on what comes out.
That is one corner of OpenMidgar, which is an open toolkit for Final Fantasy VII (1997 PC) in three pieces: the character creator, which anybody can open; the Workshop, a full modding studio; and the wiki, which is the game written down as a database.
Why the Workshop
Modding this game has always meant a shelf of separate tools, each owning one file, none of them agreeing about which table is authoritative — and the moment two of them disagree, something quietly corrupts. The Workshop is the other approach: one studio over the whole game, so a model sits beside the monster that uses it and a line of dialogue beside the map it is spoken on. It runs in a browser tab, and your work comes out as a single .iro that 7th Heaven installs like any other mod.
It reads the copy of the game on your own disk, a piece at a time, inside the tab. Nothing is uploaded and nothing in that folder is ever written to — what you get back is a separate file, and uninstalling it puts everything as it was.
The Workshop is in private beta, and the door is shut unless you have been let through. Places go out in batches so that whatever breaks for the first few is fixed before the next few arrive — it is a queue, not a competition. See what is behind it →
Why the wiki
Because the tools kept needing answers no wiki could give them. Every entity in the 1997 game — people, places, materia, monsters, and the file formats underneath them — written down as a database you can query rather than a page you can only read.
Facts carry their own dates, so Cloud is Shinra infantry from 2000 and a mercenary from 2007 and both are true at once. Everything extrapolated is marked as extrapolated and everything invented is marked as invented, so original characters can live beside canon without quietly becoming it.
What to expect
It is not finished, and this is where it has got to. None of it is a plan: the first two hold under test against the whole retail game, and the third is what is being built right now.

You will want the PC release of Final Fantasy VII — the one sold on Steam — and 7th Heaven to install what you make, the same as for any other mod. A browser with a folder picker, which means Chrome, Edge or another Chromium browser, gets the smoothest route in.
